MI State House Passes Help for Fruit Farmers

Fruit farmers will have some extra help coming from the state under legislation passed this week by the state House. Growers can apply for federal disaster loans through the USDA's Farm Service Agency, and the House approved spending $15 million to underwrite the application fees for farmers in trying to get the loans according to Saugatuck Republican Bob Genetski.

There remains a lot of uncertainty on the federal level beyond the loans, however. Republicans in the U.S. House said this week there will be no vote on a Farm Bill until after the November election and that means for a lot of farm programs, they'll either disappear completely or revert back to the 1949 Farm Bill at the end of this month.
