Joe Daly is the National Sales Manager, Foodservice and Retail POS Scales, of DETECTO. According to their website, Detecto Scale Company was started in 1900 in New York City by three immigrant brothers (The Jacobs Brothers) in the butcher supply business.

Growing:
How does DETECTO keep up with the changes in food supply technology?

Daly:
Detecto partners with many major companies within the foodservice supply technology industry and manufactures scale solutions for today’s changing applications. We interact on a daily basis with end-users, dealers, distributors operating in the food environment, so we’re being constantly informed and involved with the ever-changing nature of the business. As a USA manufacturer, we can move quickly through the research and development cycle to bring new products to market that connect with current technology and innovations.

Growing:
What is the process of creating a scale for price computing purposes?

Daly:
As a USA-made company, Detecto manufactures many different models of legal-for-trade price computing scales that automatically calculate the preset price-per-pound weight for all of the individual products offered by the vendor. We’ve also launched a series of new price computing scales that not only factor up to 5,900 PLUs, but also offer integrated label printing within the scale itself.

All of these scales require certified federal approval by the department of Weights and Measures. This certification is mandatory that they obtain an individual NTEP number, which is assigned to each model scale, and only then is it determined that that these scales are legal for use in a retail environment.

Growing:
Can you elaborate on the importance of having the right supplies for farm stands?

Daly:
It is key to have accurate legal-for-trade weighing equipment at farmers markets, because they prevent loss and mistakes at the point of sale. Legal-for-trade scales are a produce shop’s cash register because they are determining the value of each sale transaction.

Growing:
What are some trends you’re witnessing in the industry? What products are farm stand owners gravitating to?

Daly:
Farm stand owners need to be aware that today’s consumer is now gravitating towards shopping with businesses that only use “up-to-date” retail point-of-sale scales that display clear proof that their transactions are legal and accurate. Green technology is becoming more popular and to tap into that trend, we now offer a NTEP legal-for-trade solar-powered digital hanging scale for weighing produce at farmers markets. You never have to change a battery with Detecto’s SCS30 and you receive legal-for-trade accuracy on a digital readout.

Growing:
What recommendations would you have for a first-time owner/operator for a farm stand?

Daly:
We recommend that they understand what is required by the Department of National Weights and Measures for retail use, and that they only purchase approved scales via a certified and licensed scale dealer.
