Littau Harvester, based in Stayton, Oregon, has grown from a small regional provider to a national and international industry supplier of crop harvesting machinery and equipment. We asked the company about the importance of having the right harvester and the future of the industry.

Here’s what Brent Heckman, sales at Littau Harvester, had to say.

Growing:
What is the importance of having the right harvester for your farm?

Brent Heckman:
It is imperative. The most important part of utilizing the correct product depicts profit and loss. Lack of proper equipment denotes the labor and cost.

Growing:
Where do you see the industry five years down the road?

Heckman:
We could easily see a 50 percent increase or greater to more automation. Labor shortages are a massive concern and getting worse everywhere. Automation will provide the grower more control of their product and increase their bottom line.

Growing:
What are some tips you would give to someone who is buying/renting a harvester for the first time?

Heckman:
My recommendation is to do your homework and observe what harvesting costs and quality of the product the harvester/equipment returns are. Renting or leasing is a great avenue to begin prior to purchase. What works in one region may not yield the same result in another region.

Growing:
Throughout the years, designs and materials for harvesting have been evolving (i.e. automation). How does/will Littau Harvester keep up with the changes?

Heckman:
We are in the field of blueberries and cane fruits with automation. Littau Harvester works directly with the growers since they are the frontline of what works. Constant testing within our own keeps us ever changing to develop the next best return for all involved.

Growing:
How do you keep your finger on the pulse of your customer base and position yourself as a go-to brand for growers?

Heckman:
Constant communication with our clients and experimenting with different methods to keep ahead of the curve is quintessential. Our service is second to none and that keeps our clients worry free. Word of mouth is the best advertising.
