According to their website, Penns Creek Mfg. is a small family owned and operated manufacturing business in central Pennsylvania. Penns Creek began in 1987 when, unable to find a sprayer on the market like he wanted, Ben Oberholtzer built his own high pressure single boom sprayer.

Growing Magazine:
Can you elaborate the importance of having the right applicators for farming?

Oberholtzer:
With chemical prices as extreme as they are, it’s important to have a sprayer that is well calibrated and that can evenly distribute the chemical on the plants.

PennsCreekLogoGrowing Magazine:
How have you seen the industry grow?

Oberholtzer:
When we began building boom sprayers in 1992, many farmers were still using air-blast sprayers. Now these have nearly been phased out except in orchard applications. High pressure boom sprayers simply offer more precise placement and will keep the neighbors happier as well.

Growing Magazine:
Application can be a tricky topic to understand. How does Penns Creek assist customers?

Oberholtzer:
We offer tech help and assistance even if you didn’t purchase a sprayer from us. We are vegetable farmers as well, so we understand the challenges.

Growing Magazine:
Hazards are common in applicators. What are some tips on using them properly for safety purposes?

Oberholtzer:
Wear the recommended safety gear and make sure to read labels.

Growing Magazine:
Where do you see the agricultural retail industry five years down the road? How about 10?

Oberholtzer:
It’s a growing business! Sorry about the pun. People will always need to eat. Also, more people will want to know where the produce came from and how it was grown.

Five Questions is a GrowingMagazine.com monthly series that discusses industry-related topics with the people who influence the industry.
