McInerney to Lead Alliance for Food and Farming
Matt McInerney, executive vice president of Western Growers, has been elected to serve as the new chairman of the board for the Alliance for Food and Farming. McInerney replaces Rich Peterson, president of the California Dried Plum Board, who served as Alliance chairman for the past five years and will remain on the board of directors.
McInerney will work alongside newly elected Alliance Vice Chairman Mark Murai, president of the California Strawberry Commission; Secretary/Treasurer Terry Stark, president of the California Association of Pest Control Advisors; Communications Committee Chair Claire Smith, director of corporate communications for Sunkist Growers; and the rest of the board.
Other activities to be conducted: an analysis of long-term pesticide use trends; a review of the Centers for Disease Control database of foodborne illnesses; and the launch of Spray Safe, a grower-based initiative to reduce incidents of spray drift, in three California counties. In addition, the Alliance will continue to monitor issues concerning food safety; distribute media reports to its members through a new e-newsletter; and assist members in responding to negative media reports on food safety and farming issues.
