It’s in the Details

Exaktime, Inc.’s FastTrakker keeps track of how many hours workers spend on different tasks, without using handwritten timecards. This hand-held device, when used with the company’s JobClock System, lets a worker clock in for any of 1,000 activities at any number of work sites. When starting a new task, workers choose the code for that task and touch the unit to the JobClock. The system keeps track of every activity at every location for every worker, and workers can move freely between job sites. Activities are shown in both English and Spanish.

The Dirt Master

The Kwik-Way Dirt Master is a towable backhoe with a 78-inch digging depth, 65-inch loading height  and a 100-inch reach. The boom swings a full 140 degrees, and the bucket rotates 147 degrees. The standard bucket width is 12 inches, and buckets can be ordered in 9, 12 and 16-inch sizes. The bucket teeth are made from hardened steel and are replaceable. An optional ripping tooth attachment removes stumps and rips up asphalt. Each Dirt Master has a self-contained hydraulic reservoir and replaceable hydraulic filtration system, while four hydraulic levers control the boom, bucket, swing and crowd arm. Additional features include a box-beam steel frame, stabilizers, pivoting feet and safety pins. With a ball-coupler hitch and safety chains, it can be pulled by an ATV, lawn tractor or other vehicle at speeds up to 45 mph.

Super-Compact Power

Mustang’s 2012 skid steer loader is a super-compact model that measures 3 feet wide and 6.25 feet tall. Powered by a 24 hp Yanmar diesel engine, it has a rated operating capacity of 850 pounds and lift height of 96 inches. For attachments, it has auxiliary hydraulic couplers and a universal, quick-attach attachment bracket. It also features a spring-applied, hydraulic-release brake system designed to respond quickly and hold the loader whenever the operator leaves the seat. The overall machine weight is less than 2,900 pounds.

KIOTI Line Expands

KIOTI Tractor has added two models, the DK50SE HST and DK35SE HST Cab, to its growing line of DKSE hydrostatic-drive tractors. Both models are available with standard ROPS or with a fully enclosed cab. The DK50SE HST is a 49 hp tractor with a Tier IV, four-cylinder, water-cooled diesel engine; rear PTO; and Category I, three-point hitch. Standard features include power steering, wet-disc brakes, rear differential lock, and electronically engaged four-wheel drive and PTO. These features are also found on the slightly smaller 38 hp DK35SE HST.

Need a Lift?

Manitou’s M Series of rough-terrain, masted forklifts are now Tier III compliant with 94 hp, turbocharged Perkins or Caterpillar engines. Other upgrades include a dustproof and waterproof wiring harness; marine-style, water-resistant gauges; new work and road lights; and a SAHR park brake system. These units have otherwise maintained their 6,000, 8,000 and 10,000 capacities, and users still have the option of two or four-wheel drive; torque converter or hydrostatic transmission; open, semi or fully enclosed cabs; and mast height.

Aim High

The Gehl Co. V270, a skid loader with an 84 hp, turbocharged Yanmar engine and a rated operating capacity of 2,700 pounds, offers more than 130 inches of near vertical lift height, and the lift arm design allows for views to the sides of the loader and a direct line-of-sight to the bucket cutting edge. Equipped with an electronic engine control and a foot throttle, you can operate this loader at part throttle for lower sound levels and reduced fuel consumption. The cab has a new ergonomic design, while an optional pressurized sealed-cab enclosure provides a quieter operating environment. A 36.9 GPM high-flow auxiliary hydraulics option handles virtually every high-performance attachment.

A Sensitive HOBO

Onset Computer Corp., the HOBO data logger company, has released the HOBOnode Series, a family of research-grade, wireless sensors for outdoor environmental monitoring. The sensors can transmit highly accurate air temperature and soil moisture data to a PC several miles away without cables. The accompanying software displays real-time graphs of environmental conditions, and can provide alarm notifications via text messaging and e-mail when conditions exceed set thresholds. These sensors also feature integrated, solar-rechargeable batteries so they can run for years without having to replace batteries. Depending on the number of data points required, up to 50 sensors can be used in a network. They have a 1,400-foot line-of-site transmission range, which can be extended to several miles with optional HOBOnode repeaters.

Two Spreaders in One

Stoltzfus Spreaders’ Redhawk lime and fertilizer spreaders are available in 5 and 8-ton capacities for field usage. They couple a 24-inch, slat-style drag chain for heavy lime applications with the ability to spread fertilizer down to 125 pounds per acre with ground-drive accuracy. Standard features include corrosion resistant CorTen steel hopper, poly floor, fertilizer kit, walking beam suspension, hinged center divider for one-sided headland spreading, and a redesigned double-contact press wheel for increased load breakout power for packed damp lime. The Redhawk spreader is also available in a narrow 4-ton version for orchard and vineyard use. Options include banding deflectors and limb guards.

The WaterScout

Spectrum Technologies, Inc. has introduced WaterScout, a sensor that measures soil moisture without disturbing the root zone. The thin, tapered shape allows for easy insertion into the soil or growing medium. Use the handheld reader to take on-the-go spot readings, or bury the sensor and track soil moisture changes over time with a WatchDog data-logging weather station.

Stay Informed

Farm Works has introduced their latest version of software,  Farm Works Version 2009. Major additions include support of multiple clients, improved cash flow statement, expanded budget comparison report and detailed weather records. How Sweet it is!

The new Hanna HI 96801 digital refractometer is a portable, water-resistant device for testing sugar in most agricultural applications. This optical instrument uses the refractive index to display sugar content; to measure, place a few sample drops in the well and press the READ key. Within seconds the instrument measures the refractive index of the sample and converts it to % Brix concentration units. Temperature is also shown on the dual-level display along with other helpful message codes.

The Vineyard Special

Earth & Turf Products’ Model 320 Vineyard Special topdresser spreader has a slimmed-down frame and axle assembly for working in vineyards, orchards and row crops with narrow rows. It measures 45 inches at its widest point and will carry up to 2 cubic yards of material, with a maximum load weight of 3,000 pounds. This unit also features a specially designed side-to-side spread beater that distributes material only to the left and right as the unit is pulled between rows. Maximum spread width is 72 inches. An optional beater attachment assures an even spread of material across the rows. The beater and apron belt are driven by tractor hydraulics for maximum spreading flexibility.

The Power of Soy

NaEx Corp’s SOYAPLEX is an all-natural fertilizer for use on food and non-food crops. Made from non-GMO, food-grade soybeans, it is approved for organic crop production. The 8-1-2 formula provides an array of vitamins and minerals plus 15 amino acids. This product is a slow-release and non-leaching fertilizer, allowing for lower per acre application rates. In addition to providing ingredients for plant health, growth and production, it also stimulates microbial activity and improves the soil ecosystem. Available in a small granular format and a water-soluble powder for foliar applications.
