Rutgers Master Gardeners of Middlesex County are offering a new workshop that focuses on the benefits of using native plant species.
Made in the Shade: Shade Gardening with Native Plants is scheduled for June 6 from 10 am to noon and will take place at the EARTH Center located in Davidson’s Mill Pond Park, 42 Riva Ave., South Brunswick, New Jersey.
Native plants are species found in a region that pre-date the original settlers of that region. Because these plants have evolved according to local conditions, they require less use of fertilizers or pesticides.
The “Made in the Shade” workshop is designed for the beginning or intermediate gardener, looking to make a positive environmental impact through the use of native plants. Attendees will learn how the cultivation of native species helps the environment. Students will be introduced to a variety of ornamental native plants that thrive in shade and can be grown at home.
“The Master Gardeners have done so much to help us improve Middlesex County’s environment and natural beauty,” said Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “I encourage all local gardeners to attend this session. It will help you reduce the use of chemicals in your garden and learn how to utilize natural resources.”
The program is free, but registration is required by June 3. Class size is limited. After the workshop’s indoor presentation, participants should be prepared to work outdoors. For more information, call 732-398-5262.
